BVI Regattas for
All Sailors

The ongoing regatta calendar for 1999 (there is no winter layover here) features not only premier events like the BVI Spring Regatta, but regattas at all levels and types of boats. Sailors may want to plan their vacation around one of these interesting sailboat races, which involve a lot of fun activities and associated events.

The bareboat category in the BVI Spring Regatta (4-3286) on April 9-11 is particular is intriguing for those who want to sail to Anegada or sail the ocean to another island. The Barclays Challenge, the first annual feeder race from Sint Maarten to Tortola for the BVI Spring Regatta, is designed to encourage competitors to make the ocean crossing to Tortola and presents "an ideal opportunity, especially for bareboat charterers, to sail to Tortola in a controlled and fun environment," according to Bob Phillips, chairman of the 1998 BVI Spring Regatta.

The famous Foxy's Wooden Boat Regatta on May 22-23 at Foxy's (the 4th annual event in association with the West End Yacht Club), in addition to being a favorite of wooden boat fans everywhere, has become quite a spectacle in itself, combining that fascination with wooden boats, with that place so fascinating to yachties around the world--Jost Van Dyke.

Familes. For the growing numbers of sailing families, there is the Ideal 18/Optimist Family Day Out (4-3286) on May 30.

The Anegada Race (4-3286) from Road Town on August 14 is another good race for the bareboat charterer who want to go to Anegada, although there is a weekly convoy there now.

Women. The William Thornton/Virgin's Cup on October 16 requires a female skipper. The Bitter End is hosting its 8th annual Women's Sailing Week in October.

Foxy's Halloween Cat Fight (5-9275) on October 31 involves a Catamaran race as well as a costume party at Foxy's Tamarind Bar, Jost Van Dyke.

Pusser's 'Round Tortola Race on November 20 is an interesting concept and excellent race for bareboaters with a safe leg on the ocean side of  Tortola.

Defiance Day and Pro-Am Regattas on November 2-5 at the Bitter End Yacht Club have become anticpated and exciting events.
