Traffic Accident & Police Report |
During 1998, 800 traffic accidents were caused by careless
driving, including gazing at the sights, out of a total of 1029 for the
year in the BVI, including 2 fatalities and 40 serious injuries out of 230 accidents
with bodily injuries, according to Police Commissioner Vernon Malone. One problem area was
in front of the Riteway Supermarket near Wickham's Cay II. Last year, the Commissioner had
warned of potential problems with the
new "dual carriageway." The increased use of bicycles was noted and the need to comply with regulations such as required lights for their safe use. While drug trafficing was the primary policing problem, with one domestic-related murder since 1997, the Commissioner stressed financial investigative efforts and said the police will also focus on the theft of marine artifacts from protected reefs.
