Referral Fees in 1997.
B-V-I Online has sent a check for $27.56 to BVI National Parks Trust covering not only
this quarter but previous quarters as well, when we began selling books via Amazon Books
(previously there was a $100 minimum in effect before referral fees were paid).

Dear Amazon.com Associate,
December 31, 1997 marked the end of the 4th calendar quarter of 1997, and today it's time
for referral fee payments to our Associates. Last week, we mailed you a check for the
referral fees you've earned during the past quarter.
This message explains how we derived the amount of your referral fee check and lists the
qualifying books that were paid for and shipped from October 1, 1997 through December 31,
1997.

PLEASE READ THESE
IMPORTANT NOTES:
-------------------
1. It is normal to expect that your total payment may not match the
total of your weekly marketing reports. Some books ordered during the quarter may
not have been shipped by December 31, and therefore would not appear in this quarter's
payment nor on this report. These include:
A. Orders placed late in the quarter and not yet shipped.
B. Orders containing special order titles that had not yet arrived at our warehouse.
C. Any orders cancelled by the customer before shipping.
2. Once these books are shipped, they will appear in the statement for the quarter
in which they are shipped. All fees are paid at the end of the quarter in which the
shipment is sent to the customer, not the quarter in which the order is placed.
3. If you earned less than $10 in referral fees through the prior quarter (which
ended 3 months ago), you would not have received a
check at that time. In that case, you will see the unpaid amount included in the
report below and added into this quarter's payment.
4. Each line of the report lists the book title and the *total* amount we've
collected from customers for shipments of that title. In other words, there is one
line per title regardless of the number of copies shipped during the quarter.
5. Some of you may still have a few orders that were placed prior to June 2 which
shipped during the 3rd quarter and would thus be included on this report. Prior to
June 2, our standard book discount was 10% off on the 400,000 most popular titles in our
catalog. Books ordered at 10% off list price during that period earned 15% referral
fees, while books ordered at discounts of 20% or 30% earned 5% fees. Books ordered
at 40% off, special order books and others ordered at list price also earned 5% fees.
6. Effective June 2, we changed our standard book discount from 10% off to 20% off
on paperbacks and 30% off on hardcover books. At that time, we also changed the
Associates Program so that books ordered after June 1 at 20-30% off would earn 15%
referral fees just as they had when their standard discount was 10% off. As before,
books ordered at 40% off, special order books and others ordered at list price earned 5%
fees. Out of print books do not qualify for referral fees.
